Disaster Overview
A devastating 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Indian Ocean, triggering a massive tsunami that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands across Southeast Asia and left millions homeless. Communities in the south of Sri Lanka, populated by members of the political opposition, and in the east of Sri Lanka, home to the Tamil Tigers, were deliberately blocked from receiving aid, deepening the humanitarian crisis for those already hardest hit.

Impact
IFA’s humanitarian mission on the ground made a profound impact: our medical field clinic treated 3,400 patients; our feeding centers served 117,000 meals; and our trauma team provided care to 2,500 children. The team was personally recognized by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa for its life-saving work. Years later, IFA played a key role in facilitating a historic meeting between the President of Israel, Shimon Peres (z”l), and then-President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa—marking a rare moment of diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
